Gen.18:19 NKJV “For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice, that the LORD may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.”
I've always liked that verse, though I've often wondered at the timing of the LORD saying it. He was speaking to two angels visiting Abraham just before the destruction of Sodom. Why did the LORD say it in Abraham's hearing? Maybe it was to reaffirm His promise of Abraham having future offspring. Perhaps is was a reminder for why righteous living was important in light of the pending judgment against Sodom and Gomorrah.
Either way, here's why that same mindset matters today.
The book of Galatians tells us that those who are of faith have been grafted into Abraham's family, and thereby recipients of the same promises. It's important to remember that God's commands still apply. To borrow a similar, but catchy line from Spiderman, "with privilege comes responsibility", and there's truth in it. Just as God chose Abraham, He chooses those who display faith in Christ. He charged Abraham to teach his descendants righteousness and justice then, and He charges us to do the same now.
There's another interesting similarity between us. Abraham was made aware of the judgement about to occur during that conversation, and the Bible tells us judgment is coming again. Perhaps very soon. The knowledge of this, should make us all the more diligent to teach our children how to live righteously considering the days ahead.
